AI assistance is coming to Google Calendar, thanks to Gemini

Google has integrated its Gemini AI into Google Calendar, creating a side panel that simplifies schedule management. This new feature allows users to interact with their calendars using natural language commands, eliminating the need for manual searches and event creation.
Here’s how it works:

  • Schedule Inquiries: Users can ask questions like “When is my next meeting with Chris?” or “How many meetings do I have next week?” to quickly access their schedule.
  • Event Creation: Gemini can create calendar events based on simple commands such as “Add lunch with my parents to my schedule at 11 a.m. Tuesday” or “Add a workout to my calendar every weekday at 6 a.m.” (Note: Inviting attendees still requires manual input.)

Event Details:

Users can retrieve event information by asking questions like “When is my lunch meeting with my parents?” or “How long is my meeting next Friday?”
Early testing indicates Gemini’s ability to interpret context and understand less precise queries. For example, it successfully identified “shows” and “doctor appointments” even when those terms weren’t explicitly used in the event titles.
This feature is currently available through Google Workspace Labs, an early access testing program. To use it, users must enroll in Workspace Labs and then access the “Ask Gemini” icon within Google Calendar on the web.

Important points to consider:

  • The Gemini Calendar feature is not yet available on the mobile app.
  • Disabling Gemini for Calendar requires leaving Google Workspace Labs entirely, and re-enrollment is not possible.
